GLENDALE SATELLITE LIBRARY | Glendale Library Connection / Branch in Glendale, CA | Built, 2008| Size: 2,200 S.F. | Budget: $740K | Client: City of Glendale Libraries, Nancy Hunt Coffey, Cindy Cleary, Carolyn Flemming | Project Brief: The library is a remarkable exercise in cross-platform, cross-techonology integration. The renovation of a 20s unreinforced masonry art deco building has a strange faceted plan, making a stack-centric library impossible. The proposal is for a perimeter shelving system that layers as lighting/glare control system, artificial lighting housing, signage, identity system and magazine rack; freeing up the main floor for events. The project is built of a custom/prefab steel frame with heat-formed, laser-punctured acrylic panels. The punctured patterns are the result of the parametrization of the building's facet angles, sun paths, uv tolerance of books, panel orientation and interference patterns (slit-experiment). Impossible without computing - the skin interacts computationally with the complex elements feeding it. Project Team (Osborn): Shahram Moghbel (P-in-C) Juan Azulay (Senior Lead Designer, Associate), Catherine Garrison, Kate Harvey, Quyen Luong, Gregory Thorpe. Parametric Design Consultant, Catia DP: Nick Pisca Contractor: Ru Jensen, Electro Construction. |
